What we need to KNOW…
  • Where to find new curriculum documents, Progressions, Rubrics, Writing Plan and Blueprints.
  • Each standard has a progression that helps us to illuminate what’s new and reiterate what came before.
  • Understanding by Design, Teaching and Assessment Framework, Backward Design are all different names for the same great teaching practice.
  • RACER Rubric is for short, constructed response paragraphs. Focus on Reading Standards.
  • 6 Traits Rubric is for longer, multi-paragraph essays. Focused on Writing Standards.
  • Progression of standards is reflected in the levels of the rubrics.

What we need to UNDERSTAND
  • We must determine essential KUDos and Evidence of Mastery of standards before we can plan instruction.
  • Assessment design comes BEFORE Instructional activities in solid UbD practice.
  • Development of Common Formative Assessments at the beginning of the planning process helps strengthen PLCs and student performance.
  • CCSS and New Literacy Framework require a focus on writing unlike anything we have seen in a very long time.

What we need to be able to DO
  • Today:
    • Access and refer to curriculum documents on dps68ela.wikispaces.com.
    • Articulate links between CCSS and rubric levels.
    • Plan a Unit 1 constructed response CFA that will be evaluated using the RACER Rubric.
    • From this day forward:
      • o [Remind/Cajole/Guide/Force] your content area colleagues to refer to their literacy blueprints and writing requirements for all courses.
      • o Use rubrics with students to guide performance, give feedback and analyze student progress.
      • o Unpack standards and determine acceptable evidence BEFORE planning what book, essay, or activity will be done in class.
      • o Use roadmaps, blueprints, progressions to plan instruction.
      • o Use rubrics to gather data about what how students are progressing.
      • o Use data from rubrics to guide your instruction – formulating groups, identifying students’ needs, determining topics for re-teaching.


EVIDENCE that will let us know we’ve got it:
  • We can find what we are looking for on the wiki.
  • We can interpret the rubrics and analyze the language of the descriptors.
  • We can write a solid CFA with the members of our PLC (at the beginning of our unit planning!)
  • We plan standards-based lessons using the tools available to us.
  • We collect and refer to rubric data in our PLC meetings.
  • We modify our instruction based on what the rubric data tells us.
